Converting from one unit to another is a two-step calculation: the input is first translated into the base unit, then from the base unit into the target unit. This is why a converter stays accurate even for unusual pairings, like square miles to hectares or knots to feet per second, that don't have an obvious direct formula — the base unit acts as a common reference point underneath every category.
